Even I have no good explanation of why I drive a large sedan/saloon instead of a ute.

Rust, mostly

Presumably not-rusty utes exist though, right?

Because wagon.
![]() 07/18/2017 at 23:16 |

But what is a ute if not an open-top wagon?

Because Big Pickup is running a conspiracy campaign to prevent us from wanting Utes so we drive trucks instead

i’m rebuilding my ute and it doesnt run right now okay

Point: refuted.

Kids can drive their own ute for family ute convoy

Because back seats are useful on occasion.
Because load capacity comes with a shitty harsh ride.
Because you like to have oversteer only when you want it, it not randomly and often.
Because you like to light up the tires only when you want to, not every time you need a bit of acceleration.
Because you don’t like stuff getting stolen out of the back.
Because you don’t like stuff getting rained on in the back.
Because too damn late, nobody makes them any more.

Not when they’re 2. Power Wheels aren’t fast enough.

I’m making a ute with jump seats and Jag rear suspension that has an LSD, with the engine moved back in the body, so that’s points 1-4 taken care of. Points 5-6 = bedcap, and 7 = ME, I MAKE UTE.
Of course, I *did* start with a horribly rusty shitpile of a Ranchero and start a project car of uncontrolled tumor-like scope, but meh.

Conversely, I have no explanation as to why so many ute owners have hardtops lids on their utes.
Why not get a properly weight balanced sports coupe?
oh yeah...that’s why

Seats and rear doors. Covering to keep the weather out.
In some places, especially for commuter vehicles that rarely have more than a couple people in them in dry/temperate environments, they seem like a solution to a lot of life’s problems.
El Caminos were pretty popular in SoCal when I was a kid...

California no one under 18 in an open cargo bed.

I think we’ve previously had a conversation on the fine line between brilliant and stupid :-).
It’s hard to argue with someone who chooses to put insane amounts of time and probably money into creating something that is almost certainly inferior in every measurable way to what they could have bought off the shelf for less. All one can do is applaud them.
As someone whose ventures into automotive construction over the last year or so have been limited to throwing some soundproofing at the GT86, I applaud you, Sir.
Hadn’t heard about the Jag IRS before. Is that recent scope creep, or have I just not been paying attention?

I’m fairly certain that could be fixed...

For me, it’s simply timing.
Twice now I’ve been within moments of pulling the trigger on an SD1 ute and an XJ40 ute.
Each time there’s been just enough problems to prevent me from buying them. Not with the car, but with personal finances and/or space.

Also, they wouldn’t make it past the first park.

For me, because passengers. I love utes. I’d find it very hard to resist one. But I need more than 2 seats.
If they had a second row (and were available here, obviously), I’d have one. Even if it was something like a Ranger-style pair of jump seats. Come to think of it... I’d prefer that to a full rear bench.

Subaru solved that problem years ago.

The Jag IRS has been part of the setup for quite a while. It was originally an XJ-S unit and I’ve narrowed it 3" per side. The gears are a little tall (2.88), but since I have a 4.1:1 first gear in the transmission, it’s not a problem.

Because when at traffic lights, people can go and steal whatever is in the back.

Literally no one has ever seen that happen

Of course, otherwise they would’ve noticed the theft before it was too late.
